Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 October 2026

Australian Tax Experts (“we”, “us”, “our”) respects your privacy. This policy explains how we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information, both through this website and when we act for you. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles, and tax file numbers in line with the Privacy (Tax File Number) Rule 2015.

1. Who we are

Australian Tax Experts is a team of tax lawyers and tax accountants based at Suite 903, Level 9, 265 Castlereagh Street, Sydney NSW 2000. We advise on ATO audits, objections and disputes, penalties, private rulings, tax compliance and complex tax matters. Our website address is www.australiantaxexperts.com.au.

2. The personal information we collect

We collect only the information we reasonably need to respond to you and to provide our services. Depending on how you deal with us, this may include:

  • Contact details: your name, email address, phone number, postal or business address and preferred language.
  • Enquiry details: what you tell us about your tax matter when you contact us or book a consultation.
  • Identity and tax information: date of birth, identity documents, tax file number, ABN and details of related entities such as companies, trusts and superannuation funds.
  • Financial and matter records: tax returns, ATO correspondence and notices, assessments, bank statements, accounting records, contracts and information about your income, assets, business and family arrangements.
  • Billing information: quotes, invoices and payment records, including through our client portal.
  • Website information: technical data such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you visit and how you arrived at the site, collected through cookies and similar tools.

Sometimes a matter requires sensitive information. For example, a request to the ATO to remit penalties may rely on medical records or other personal circumstances. We collect sensitive information only with your consent, or where the law requires or allows it, and we use it only for the purpose for which you gave it.

3. How we collect personal information

We usually collect personal information directly from you: through the enquiry and consultation forms on this website, by email, by phone, in meetings and through documents you give us. We may also collect it from third parties when this is reasonably necessary or you have authorised it, for example from the ATO or a state revenue office, your previous adviser or tax agent, your accountant, or publicly available sources such as ASIC and ABN registers.

You can browse this website without telling us who you are, and you may make a general enquiry without identifying yourself. However, we cannot act for you, or deal with the ATO on your behalf, without identifying you.

4. Why we collect, hold, use and disclose it

We use personal information to:

  • respond to your enquiry and assess whether and how we can help;
  • provide our services, including advice, lodgements, objections, private ruling applications, voluntary disclosures and representation before the ATO, tribunals and courts;
  • confirm your identity and manage conflicts of interest;
  • issue quotes and invoices and manage our client relationship;
  • meet our legal, regulatory and professional obligations, including as tax practitioners and, where legal services are involved, as lawyers;
  • send you updates or articles you have asked for (you can unsubscribe at any time); and
  • understand how our website is used, so we can improve it.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it to target advertising to you.

5. Who we may disclose it to

We disclose personal information only for the purposes above, with your consent, or where the law requires or allows it. Recipients may include:

  • the Australian Taxation Office, state and territory revenue offices, the Administrative Review Tribunal, courts and other regulators, in the course of a matter you have engaged us on;
  • barristers, valuers and other experts we engage for your matter, with your agreement;
  • our related firm, Quantum House Australia, where you ask us to involve it in accounting or business advisory work;
  • service providers who support our practice, such as website hosting, email, cloud storage, practice management, customer relationship management (HubSpot) and IT support, who may handle information only on our instructions; and
  • our insurers and professional advisers, where needed to manage our practice.

We also owe you duties of confidentiality. Where legal professional privilege applies to our communications with you, we will protect it.

6. Disclosure outside Australia

Some of our service providers store or process information outside Australia. In particular, website analytics (Google Analytics), website statistics and spam protection (Jetpack and Akismet by Automattic) and embedded videos and maps (YouTube and Google Maps) are provided by companies that process data in the United States and other countries. Our HubSpot account uses HubSpot’s Australian data hosting region, but HubSpot and its sub-processors may access data from other countries to provide their services. Where we disclose personal information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled in a way that is consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.

7. Cookies, analytics and embedded content

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies to keep the site working, remember your choices and understand how visitors use it. We use Google Analytics, Jetpack statistics and HubSpot tracking for this purpose. On your first visit, a banner lets you accept or decline non-essential cookies. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings, although parts of the site may then not work as intended.

Pages that embed YouTube videos or Google Maps may allow those providers to set their own cookies and collect information under their own privacy policies.

8. How we hold and protect personal information

We hold personal information in electronic systems and, where necessary, in paper files. We take reasonable steps to protect it from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. These steps include access controls, password protection, secure client portal access, staff confidentiality obligations and the use of reputable service providers.

We keep personal information for as long as we need it for the purposes above and to meet our legal and professional record-keeping obligations. After that, we destroy it securely or de-identify it.

If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm to anyone, we will notify the affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires.

9. Automated decisions

We do not use computer programs to make decisions about you that could significantly affect your rights or interests. Our advice and decisions about your matter are made by people.

10. Accessing and correcting your information

You may ask for access to the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading. Please contact us using the details below. We will respond within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days. We do not charge for a request, but we may charge a reasonable fee to cover the cost of providing access to a large volume of records. If we refuse access or correction, we will tell you why in writing, unless it would be unreasonable to do so, and explain how you can complain.

11. Complaints

If you believe we have breached your privacy, please write to us using the details below and explain your concern. We will acknowledge your complaint, investigate it and respond in writing, usually within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with our response, or we have not responded within 30 days, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner:
